1. What is the Apprenticeship Program?
The Apprenticeship Program was developed by IATSE Local 99 and the U. S. Department of Labor Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) to train people to become Journeyman stage hands. The Program was created in 1989.
2. Why should I become an Apprentice?
While in the Apprenticeship Program, you will receive a mixture of hands on and classroom training in how to be a stagehand. At the end of the program with a successful examination, you will be certified as a stage Journeyman.
3. What is important about being a stage Journeyman?
Attitude and professionalism is the most important thing about being a Journeyman. Journeyman make the highest pay rate for stagehands and are the first assigned to Theatrical work by the dispatcher.
4. Who can apply to the Apprenticeship Program?
Anyone of 18 years of age with a high school diploma or a GED.
5.Do you have to be signed up with IATSE Local 99 first?
Yes. It is necessary to get more work experience.
6. How do I apply?
Applications are available in the IATSE Local 99 office Mon.-Fri. 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. The Office is located at 526 West 800 South in Salt Lake City, Utah. You will need to have a copy of your birth certificate and GED or High School Diploma. It is recommended you also bring a copy of any transcripts and a resume.
7. When does the Apprenticeship Committee do interviews?
Interviews will be held in June/July of each year. You will be contacted for your appointment time by the committee.
8. Who is on the Apprenticeship Committee?
The Apprenticeship Committee is composed of members of the IA and representatives of the Employers.
9. When do new apprentices start?
The program starts with the Fall semester classes for Salt Lake Community College.
10. Who is at the interview?
The interviews are held at the IATSE Local 99 Apprenticeship office and are attended by 3 or more representatives of the Apprenticeship Committee.
11. What happens at the interviews?
The interviews are very brief - usually about 15 minutes. You will be asked several questions about your professionalism, attitude, work ethic, and back ground.
12. How will I find out the results of the interview?
You will receive notification by phone and/or mail.
13. How much does it cost and how long is it?
The price of tuition will vary from year to year based on SLCC. The program lasts for three years.
